Ridge Geyserville 1993 is one of Vino
Joe's Favorite Wines!
This Zinfandel is red, folks, as it's supposed to be. And it follows Vino Joe's general rule of thumb: Good zin comes from wineries that start with the letter "R". (My favorites: Ridge, Renwood, Rosenblum.) Year in and year out, Ridge makes outstanding wines from several different vineyards along the California coast. Their most famous wines are labeled according to the vineyard; for example Lytton Springs, Pagani Ranch, Monte Bello, York Creek and my personal favorite, Geyserville. Each of these wines is actually a blend of grapes, usually based on Zinfandel and then mixed expertly with grapes such as Carignan, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mataro, by winemaker Paul Draper. Draper is sort of the Reggie Jackson or Michael Jordan of the wine world -- a true artisan and superstar.
Draper has been making wine from the Geyserville plot since 1966, starting with about 60% Zin and blending in various amounts of Petite Sirah, Mataro, Alicante, and anything else that has an especially awesome ripening in September. I've enjoyed several vintages of Geyserville, and 1993 is my all-time favorite. Sweet blackberry fruit, spice, vanilla and earth are a few of the elements on this dessert-like nose. In the mouth the wine defines "jammy," with rich, ripe fruit upfront and complex flavors of berries and earth that stay in the mouth long after the wine is swallowed (this is termed a "long finish"). Globs and globs of delicious fruit mark this wine and others from this winery; I'll take a Zin-based Ridge wine any day of the week.
