Family Guy, Family Guy Season Four, Family Guy un-cancelled, Seth MacFarlane, Peter Griffin, Stewie Griffin

Family Guy
Sundays at 9:00 on Fox
TV Home / Entertainment Channel / Bullz-Eye Home

There’s the fat, dopey son who’s deathly afraid of the evil monkey that lives in his closet. There’s the insecure, nerdy daughter who wants nothing more than a boyfriend and a spot on the cheerleading squad. There’s the vaguely homosexual one-year-old who dreams of world domination. There’s the talking dog who overcame a raging coke addiction. There’s the wholesome mother who once was a KISS groupie. And then there’s the affable lout of a husband who loves his wife and kids almost as much as he loves booze and his TV.

They’re the Griffins and for three seasons, “Family Guy” was one of the funniest shows on television, drawing predictable comparisons to cartoon icons “The Simpsons” and “South Park.” But after bouncing “Family Guy” around from one time slot to another during its three seasons, Fox tragically pulled the plug on Peter and his clan. Fans of the show were obviously displeased, though some of their anguish was offset by the airing of “Family Guy” reruns on Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim.” But it’s time to rejoice because Fox brought “Family Guy” back after airing the season-four premiere Sunday, May 1 along with the series premiere of creator Seth MacFarlane’s new animated comedy, “American Dad."

It’s tempting to say that the unprecedented return of “Family Guy” to network television is as sweet an example of the power of the people as there is. But it would be naïve to do so. The fact is, it wasn’t the people who spoke, but their money. Had an unholy army of Griffinites embarked on a steadfastly devoted letter-writing campaign urging Fox to bring back the show, they would have been met with a response similar to the one Roger Meyers sent Marge Simpson when she suggested that he tone down the violence in “Itchy & Scratchy” cartoons.

But that is not what happened. Rather, Fox saw the light on “Family Guy” because, when they released the Volume One and Volume Two DVDs, people bought them by the truckload. Now, that is a language that a studio understands. Its return to primetime (not to mention the Griffin's CD debut, Family Guy: Live in Las Vegas) was not a matter of Fox giving the people what they want. It was, in fact, the people giving Fox what it wants: piles and piles of money.

So call it a win-win. The fans get their beloved show back, while Fox -- which has propped itself up the last three years by running “American Idol” four days a week -- finally has a property that isn’t hemorrhaging money. Either way, it’s pretty freakin’ sweet, if you ask us. We just hope they can find a way to bring back that trash-talking quadriplegic.
