When 2007 kicked off, AMC was a network best known for the fact that it had, after putting Halle Berry's "Catwoman" into its screening rotation, given up all pretense that the letters in its name still stood for "American Movie Classics." Before the end of the year, however, people had stopped talking about AMC's movies and started buzzing about its original programming, thanks to the unexpected success of a new hour-long drama about – of all things – an ad agency during the 1960s. Given that the show's creator, Matthew Weiner, had arrived from a stint on HBO's "The Sopranos," nobody was really surprised that it was good. But there's good, and then there's "Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series" good, and you'd damned well better believe that "Mad Men" falls into the latter category.
The characters of Don Draper (Jon Hamm), Betty Draper Francis (January Jones), Roger Sterling (John Slattery), Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss), Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser) and Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks) have come a long way since the premiere of "Mad Men," with the show's mesmerizing characters going through the same changes America was experiencing at the time, which is to say that things have evolved considerably over the years. And we expect that trend to continue throughout the show's run on AMC.

After a 17-month hiatus, "Mad Men" is finally returning to AMC. Will Harris previews the upcoming fifth season.

Don Draper | August 14, 2009
This is what (Don) does. He absorbs culture, repackages it, and presents it as whatever it is in a campaign. He has to have that. That's what fuels him.

Peggy Olson | September 28, 2010
I think that 90% of what Peggy does, she’s learned from Don. I think that she really respects him and looks up to him, and he’s starting to ask her to make these decisions on her own.

Joan Holloway | August 14, 2009
In season two, I worked with a lot of guest stars. So I found myself always meeting new people, and they were all talented and amazing actors, but sometimes you miss your family and you want to work more with just your family.

Pete Campbell | August 14, 2009
I have been blindsided by, like, four or five stories. Like, literally, I have been reading the scripts like, 'Holy shit! Are you kidding me?'

Harry Crane | August 7, 2009
("Mad Men") was my final audition of the pilot season. It had been three miserable, horrible months where I had zero callbacks, zero positive reception. And then that happened.

Sally Draper | February 4, 2011
I’ve known Sally for so long, I’ve almost become her in a way. It’s pretty easy to get into Sally.

October 2009
With some occasional inappropriate behavior that's mostly a cry for help, Betty tends to bring out our inner rescuer despite the fact that she's capable of being fairly petty and is not above revenge sex.

May 2009
Being the head secretary of a clubby advertising firm in early sixties Manhattan is not a job for sissies or simpletons, and the ultra-feminine, yet hard as nails, yet also deeply vulnerable Miss Holloway is neither.

From Premium Hollywood | December 6, 2009
I have a feeling that the deepest parts of the series have yet to be presented, and that much of what we've seen over the past three years has been a sort of buildup.

Ranked #2
If we’re going to be doing these TV Power Rankings on an annual basis, then we’re forced to go with our instincts here and presume that “Mad Men” will continue to be as awesome in the future as it has been up to this point.

Ranked #1
The proceedings kicked off with a question – "Who is Don Draper?" – which had been asked many times in the past, but over the course of these 13 episodes, there were times when we finally felt like we might actually be closing in on an answer.

Ranked #3
With new advertising worlds to conquer, the Beatles about to arrive, and one of the most memorable assortments of characters in recent TV history on board, we can barely wait for 2010/1964.

Ranked #1
A semi-surreal late-season left turn with a roving band of wealthy Euro-bohemians was just the tip of the iceberg as rape, nuclear annihilation, religion and the meaning of existence were broached.
