Crazy on the Outside (January 8)
Tim Allen has been responsible for some of the most wretched "comedies" of the last decade, so we know we're going out on a limb by including his directorial debut in our Winter Movie Preview -- but with a supporting cast that includes Sigourney Weaver, Ray Liotta, and Jeanne Tripplehorn, as well as a storyline that gives us Allen as a fast food-working ex-con, we're willing to roll the dice on "Crazy on the Outside."
Daybreakers (January 8)
Another vampire movie? And one that's tumbling out of the studio pipeline after multiple delays, only to face the cold January theater market? The odds would seem to be stacked against "Daybreakers" -- especially given that B-movie vets Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe take top billing -- but this tale of a vampire-plagued future has been earning surprisingly positive advance reviews.
Youth in Revolt (January 8)
We all love Michael Cera, but it's become increasingly hard to ignore the extremely limited range of the characters he plays. Miguel Arteta's adaptation of C.D. Payne's "Youth in Revolt" -- in which Cera plays the milquetoast Nick Twisp as well as his mustachioed, skirt-chasing imaginary alter ego, Francois -- might be just the thing to save Cera from a career of nothing but George Michael clones.
The Book of Eli (January 15)
Yeah, it looks kind of like Kevin Costner's "The Postman," but "The Book of Eli" has a few things going for it -- including the Hughes brothers directing, Denzel Washington in the lead, and the always-delectable Mila Kunis in a supporting role. Besides, the film's desert wasteland might look kind of appealing in the middle of January, don't you think?
Edge of Darkness (January 29)
Remakes are depressingly popular in Hollywood right now, and even when a filmmaker revisits his own material, you aren't guaranteed positive results (see: "Funny Games"). But "Edge of Darkness," which finds Martin Campbell retracing the steps of his BBC miniseries for American theaters, looks promising -- there's nothing like a police revenge thriller, for one thing, and it'll be twice as satisfying with a gone-too-long Mel Gibson in the lead.
When in Rome (January 29)
We try to avoid chick flicks like the plague, and that rule goes double for anything with Josh Duhamel's name above the title. But "When in Rome," which stars Kristen Bell as a New Yorker who unwittingly unleashes a romantic spell from a Roman fountain, features an intriguing array of supporting talent -- including Will Arnett, Jon Heder, Dax Shepard, and Danny DeVito, all starring as Bell's hapless would-be suitors.
