Walk around just about anywhere in the city of Prague and you will enjoy the unique atmosphere of this city no matter what you do. Exploring the city’s cobblestone streets on foot will give you the opportunity to see twice as many attractions as you would by taxi or tram. Prague’s numerous attractions are crammed into a compact area measuring only 308 square miles, so strolling from sight to sight should be easy. Another great thing about Prague is B.E.E.R. So strolling from site to site will also allow you to make frequent stops at Prague’s many pubs (or infamous beer gardens) to sample some authentic Czech beer.
Depending on how much time you have to spend in Prague, there are several must-sees. Because they say walking really is the only way to see Prague, make your first sightseeing stop at Charles Bridge. During a walk across this stone Gothic bridge, you will explore towers, Baroque statues, as enjoy incredible views of Pražský hrad (Prague Castle) at sunset. One of the most famous statues along the bridge is the statue of St. John of Nepomuk – a Czech martyr saint who was executed during the reign of Wenceslas IV by being thrown into the Vltava from the bridge. It is believed that by touching the plaque on the statue, you will have good luck and you will return to Prague.
Charles Bridge is an excellent attraction to explore during the day, but if you have time to return at night, what you will get is an excellent view of one of Prague’s top attractions -- Prague Castle. The largest medieval castle complex in Europe, this ancient seat of Czech kings houses Prague's most prominent landmark -- Saint Vitus Cathedral, art galleries, a monastery, several palaces, viewing towers, and St. George's Basilica – the second oldest church in Prague and a popular venue for classical concerts. Golden Lane is an ancient street lined by 11 miniature houses – the former homes of goldsmith’s and castle marksmen.
Other notable attractions at this location include Prague Castle Gardens and the change of the guards. The change of the guards takes place daily, and every hour from 5:00 p.m. - 11 p.m. The noon ceremony includes a fanfare and banner exchange. Hours for Prague Castle vary depending on attraction and time of year. Old Town Square is ranked high on the list of must-see attractions, as this historic square houses numerous notable sights and a slew of restaurants, cafes, and bars (nearby). One of only two main squares in Prague (Wenceslas Square is the other), Old Town Square’s major highlights include: Church of Our Lady before Tyn, the Old Town Hall Tower, Prague Astronomical Clock, St. Nicholas Church, the rococo Kinský Palace which houses the National Gallery exhibition hall, the Stone Bell House -- a 14th century gothic city palace which is now a Municipal Gallery concert and exhibition room, and the Memorial to Master Jan Hus sculptured by Ladislav Saloun (1915). Also marked in the Old Town Square pavement is the place where 27 Czech men were executed on June 21, 1621.
Also located in Old Town, Klementinium is the second largest complex of buildings in Prague (to Prague Castle). Klementinium was founded in 1232 and The Chapel of Mirrors was built in 1724. Also a concert venue, this attraction is considered one of the most beautiful sights in Prague. Klementinium is also a concert venue and sightseeing tours are available.
