Paris in a Day

Wake up around 8:00 AM, grab a baguette or another quick breakfast and head to the Louvre [METRO: Palais Royal Musee du Louvre, get a day pass], which opens at 9:00 AM. It’s best to get there early because the museum gets more crowded as the day goes on. Go see the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo and Napoleon’s apartments. The Louvre contains over 35,000 works of art, so you could spend days in there. But you’ve only got one, so hop on the metro and head towards the Arc De Triomphe [METRO: Charles de Gaulle – Etolle]. You can walk under the roundabout and for several euros, climb to the top and watch the roundabout, which is the meeting point of 14 roads, including the eight-lane Champs-Elysees. It is rumored that there is some sort of collision here every seven minutes. It’s free to walk around the base and take some pictures.

It should be getting on noon at this point, so it’s time to head to Harry’s New York Bar [METRO: Opera], which is believed to be the origin of the bloody mary. Order one and take a load off. They taste great, but be warned they cost 11 euro each. Next, walk back to the metro, take a gander at the Place de L’Opera and then find the bakery in the metro station. Grab a sandwich and a drink (don’t eat it yet) and head for the Eiffel Tower [METRO: Champ de Mars – Tour Eiffel]. Walk to the Champ De Mars, the park just to the southeast of the tower. Sit down on the grass and enjoy lunch while gazing at one of the most beautiful sites in the world.

After a long, late lunch, hop on the metro and head to Notre Dame [METRO: St. Michel-Notre Dame], one of the most recognized churches in the world. When it gets to be about dinnertime, head up to L’Ardoise [28 rue du Mont Thabor, Paris; # 01-42-96-28-18; METRO: Concorde] for dinner. Once the sun sets, it’s time to head back to the Eiffel Tower [METRO: Champ de Mars – Tour Eiffel] to see it at night. You can stand in line to take two elevators to the top, or you can grab some wine and sit on the grass again to enjoy the view. Every hour after sunset, the Tower puts on a light show, which is not to be missed.

That’s it - you’re done. You’ve just seen the major sights of the city in a day. Now go crash at your hotel, or better yet, go have a drink – you’re in Paris!
