I’ve always held Prince up to the highest of standards, but based on some of his
recent work I didn’t expect much from his latest release, Musicology. So of
course, I was pleasantly surprised when the album exceeded my rather low
expectations. Many people do not realize just how talented and intelligent
Prince is. Some of his obscure offerings, however, have no doubt tainted his
reputation, but a lot of his views on real-life situations still hit home for
thousands. Through his writing, Prince has always said plain things in a very
special way, an ability that’s helped him connect with his listeners. Musicology
got maximum exposure on VH1, BET and MTV, and its debut was trumpeted by a
tremendous publicity effort.
The title track announces Prince’s intentions up front, paying tribute to “back
n da day” with lyrics like, “Let’s groove September / Earth, Wind and Fire / Hot
pants by James / Sly’s gonna take you higher.” “A Million Days” is an
intoxicating slow groove about the pain of being apart from someone you love:
“You’re the perfect picture of what love should look like / and I wanna be the
frame.” Another slow piece, “On the Couch,” Prince begs forgiveness and asks not
to have to sleep on the couch, expressing his love like only Prince can.
Musicology contains another ballad, “Call My Name,” a song about relationships
and the stress they often endure. “Cinnamon Girl” and “What Do You Want Me to
Do” are nice driving tracks.
All in all, Musicology is a nice package of songs that should please any true
Prince fan. Especially those who weren’t expecting much from this release.
