It’s hard to get past the musical snobbery in some of the other reviews of the
self-titled debut by She Wants Revenge. Sure, they sound a lot like Interpol,
which means they sound a lot like New Order, the Cure and the Psychedelic Furs,
but if they write good songs – who really cares?
She Wants Revenge is the brainchild of two Los Angeles DJs, Justin Warfield and
Adam Bravin. The result is a carefully produced sound that fills every nook and
cranny with effective dance beats and moody hooks. The album’s two most
accessible songs are “Broken Promises for Broken Hearts” and “Sister,” which
both feature a quiet Goth-rock buildup to an infectious synth-filled chorus.
Warfield’s capable monotone moves through sexually charged lyrics (from
“Sister”): “He pulled back the sheets / and said you better lie down because
the angels are watching / she closed her eyes and said quit the talking / you
can hurt me, do whatever you like.” Most of the songs follow this successful
format, but the last track on the album (not counting the untitled track 66),
“She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not,” stands out as an ode to conflicted love.
The disc as a whole is at least on par with (or better than) either of
Interpol’s efforts. There’s nothing particularly groundbreaking here, but the
songs are infectious and the production talent of Warfield and Bravin cannot be
denied. Time will tell if the former DJs are serious about their new career or
if this was just a musical experiment. Either way, the music is good – so who
really cares?
