Fans of John Lennon will love this amazing new compilation of acoustic versions of some of Lennon’s best solo work. Lennon’s raw talent is on full display throughout this CD, along with his political activism. Lennon was brutally honest, and this collection includes some concert clips with Lennon speaking to the audience. In the introduction to “John Sinclair,” Lennon rails against apathy, acknowledging that flower power may not have worked, but that was no reason to give up on worthy causes like peace and justice. In “The Luck of the Irish,” Lennon harshly criticizes the English rule over the Irish, calling it genocide. Lennon never pulled any punches, and it’s refreshing to see this side of him on display on this CD.

With that honesty came real passion for the issues he cared about along with the music itself, and the music is naturally the main attraction here. The version of “Imagine” is wonderful, and the CD opens with a memorable version of “Working Class Hero.” “God” is another wonderful live recording, as Lennon explains how he doesn’t believe in things like God, the Beatles and Buddha, but rather believes in himself. It’s classic Lennon. My favorite track is “Dear Yoko.” I’ve always liked the song, but this acoustic version is even better than the original recording.

This compilation of stripped-down Lennon recordings offers a very entertaining glimpse of a musical genius at work. Lennon fans will love it, and younger fans looking for great music should pick it up as well.
