What really puts Green Grass above the other Jayhawks albums, besides the best batch of tunes they've ever written, is the three-part harmonies between singer/guitarists Mark Olson (one of the most underrated singers in rock) and Gary Louris, and new member Karen Grotberg on keyboards. Grotberg's presence broadened their range almost exponentially, adding a touch of vulnerability to heartbreakers like the classic "I'd Run Away" and "Red's Song" that Hollywood Town Hall implied but ultimately lacked. This is not to say that Green Grass doesn't rock as well; they pull off a minstrel type rendition of Grand Funk's "Bad Time" with a little help from Texas' Sharleen Spiteri, and the singalong "Ten Little Kids" closes the album out on a grand high note, albeit one wallowing in feedback. Sadly, Olson left the band after this album, and while the Jayhawks have soldiered on (and finally had some belated success), Tomorrow the Green Grass is the definitive moment where the Jayhawks undoubtedly had it all. ~David Medsker dmedsker@bullz-eye.com
