Imagine a boy band that doesn’t sing and dance like they’re in a fitness video. Imagine a boy band that plays their own instruments. Imagine a boy band with a rock edge. You’ve just imagined Maroon 5, and they’re far from imaginary. The band’s major label debut, Songs About Jane, has fired them up to the top of every industry “hot” list, and for good reason. These boys -- okay, guys -- are funky, hip, and really talented musicians and songwriters that resemble Third Eye Blind more than any boy band.

“Harder to Breathe” is a lyrical rap song with cool guitar riffs and a singsong chorus -- think Jason Mraz  fronting Papa Roach, with backing vocals by N’Sync. “This Love” is the first single and is just a great pop song with really infectious melodies. “Shiver” has more of those smoking guitar parts and catchy rhythms, maybe a little like Prince. “She Will Be Loved” is a pop song that has a 1980s throwback feel, and by that I mean ala Phil Collins meets the Outfield. Tunes like “Tangled” and “The Sun” have a modern Santana feel. “Sunday Morning” has a nice R & B feel and a groove true to the song’s title. As with a lot of records these days, some of the latter tracks leave a little to be desired, but it’s still all solid material.

I have to admit that the first few times I put this CD in, I didn’t instantly like it. I’m glad I gave it a chance, because now I can’t take it out of my player. The songs grow on you and then stick in your head like a hot chick you can’t stop thinking about. If you’re into good pop/rock music, give this one a chance and you won’t be disappointed.
