Not only can Mark Selby sing with conviction, he plays blues guitar like it’s his job. And well, lucky for him, it is. Selby, who has had songs recorded by the Dixie Chicks and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, releases this follow-up to 2000’s More Storms Comin’ with a collection of songs about love, heartache and life choices. It’s mean and it’s tender, but most of all Dirt should put this Nashville-based singer/songwriter on the map.

A trail of smoke emanates from the opening blues anthem, “Reason Enough,” as Selby shows off his chops on slide guitar. “Back Door to My Heart” is the first single and it beckons to an era when radio was all about good pop songs by artists like the Eagles and a young Bruce Springsteen. “Willin’ to Burn” has a distinct southern flavor to it and “Moon Over My Shoulder” (stay with me here) sounds like a cross between Dave Matthews and Jackson Browne and in my opinion is the best track on the record. “Moon Over My Shoulder” and “You” are classic cry-in-your-beer ballads while “One Man” and “Unforgiven” are less melodic and more about Selby’s phenomenal guitar playing. The title track is buried at the end and as it’s not very inspiring, this was a wise choice.

These days testosterone seems to be measured by computerized walls of guitars and inaudible screaming, but Mark Selby offers something a little more refreshing. It’s simply ballsy rock and roll, with bad-ass guitar playing and words you can not only understand, but relate to.
