The latest release for G. Love on Epic is destined to be a powerhouse. I first saw these guys when my band opened for them at the Odeon in Cleveland almost two years ago, and I was not particularly impressed. But this effort finds me among the newly converted. G. Love shows some real songwriting brilliance by mixing rap, funk, blues and R&B into a package so palatable almost anyone will dig it.

"Unified" and "Phase Up," the first two tracks, and "Free At Last" put them in the Sugar Ray category -- songs that are instantly catchy with grooves that even pop radio will embrace. "Night of the Living Dead" and "Sarah's Song" have an almost Grateful Dead/Neil Young jam-band vibe, and "Shy Girl" has an R&B flavor reminiscent of 1970s soul music, ala Marvin Gaye. "Parasite" and "Hopeless" are modern- sounding rap anthems that could put this guy in the Eminem class real soon. And "100 Magic Rings" is a cross between Jimi Hendrix's "Castles in the Sand" and Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side."

With so much diversity, you would think the record label would have trouble classifying G. Love's Music. Personally, I hear so much melody, rhythm and soul in The Electric Mile that it will easily transcend categorization and appeal to the masses.
