CD Reviews:  Eve 6: Horrorscope

The sophomore major label release for Eve 6 seems to have many styles and influences, but mainly it's a good rock record. It's got splashes of 1980s new wave, punk and straight-ahead modern rock that are led by powerful and unique lead vocalist Max Collins.

Horrorscope kicks into overdrive right from the start with "Rescue," a song that brings to mind 1980s bands Duran Duran and Oingo Boingo. "Promise," "Nocturnal" and "Ampetamines" have that staccato guitar and speed-drumming reminiscent of bands like Green Day or early Goo Goo Dolls. Like so many other records, I kind of lost interest midway through, where some of the songs start sounding the same. However, this CD gets an extra half-star based on the mega-hit "Here's To the Night," a made-for-radio pop tune complete with REAL strings. It's got that anthemic feel that "Every Breath You Take" by the Police had -- in essence a perfectly constructed alt/pop ballad. And it's something everyone can relate to, a track about good times that inevitably must come to an end.

Once bands like Eve 6 cross over from the modern rock to the pop charts, it's hard to say if they will stay on top or go back to relative obscurity. Here's hoping they are not a one-hit wonder, and there's more great songs to come.
