CD Reviews:  Better Than Ezra: Closer

It's easy for me to review BTE, one of my favorite bands ever. They have a pop/alternative flavor along the lines of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Matchbox Twenty and Third Eye Blind, yet singer/guitarist/songwriter Kevin Griffin has one of the most unique voices and writing styles.

The first track off Closer, "Misunderstood," is extremely catchy. I wasn't real fond of the first single, "Extra Ordinary," but lyrically and rhythmically it has the vibe of a fun Barenaked Ladies song. The title track, as well as "A Lifetime" and "Get You In," are riveting slow- to mid-tempo songs that, like some of BTE's best material, paint amazingly vivid pictures. "Recognize" has a little more blues/Cajun flavor, showing off the band's New Orleans roots.

This whole record is so polished and well-produced, it's almost like Better Than Ezra can put out great efforts in their sleep. With this, their fourth major release, they have yet to disappoint and if possible they keep getting better.
