Marc Solomon, a.k.a. Solly, is no stranger to the under-the-radar rock scene.
The Texas native spent some time in Los Angeles and has been in and out of bands
the past fifteen years, including with a group called Perfect alongside
ex-Replacement Tommy Stinson. Get It Wrong It’s Alright is Solomon’s
first release under the Solly moniker, and is some of the most infectious pop
he’s ever created. Not only is this album instantly likeable, but it has an old
school punk rock attitude in spots and intelligent introspection in others.
With the opening track, “Welcome Down,” you can almost feel the breeze through
your car window with your foot firmly on the accelerator. If you can’t, you’ve
probably never driven a car, at least not with the music cranked.
“Disproportioned” is an upbeat melodic gem, the kind of song that could make the
most uncoordinated of people jump around. “Waste Awhile” is the kind of
in-your-face three-chord rock that would make the likes of Joey Ramone or even
Mick Jagger smile.
“Dip in the Pool” and “All That” are flowing Stratocaster-strummed pieces that
even Paul Westerberg would be comfortable singing—pretty songs that retain their
cool factor. “Worth It?” and “Pick It Up” are not great songs compared to the
rest of the record, but could be classified as very strong B-side material.
Solly is an artist that could easily remain underneath the mainstream, touring
the cool indie rock clubs across the nation with moderate success. Or he could
break through in a big way with Get It Wrong It’s Alright. But anyone who
favors this brand of pop/rock with solid songwriting shouldn’t wait for Solly’s
fate to be dealt…. just go out and buy it.
