With a name like Vinni, who doesn’t picture some fat dude with his face in a
bowl of pasta? But this is Vinni with an “i” instead of a “y” or an “ie” -- yes,
Vinni Blue is a chick. And a cool one at that. The other thing that might
confuse some folks is the picture of Miss Blue on the back of the CD More
Than Anything, wearing a cowboy hat. While there are flavors of
country-tinged artists like Patty Griffin and Allison Moorer, Blue leans more
toward the pop alternative genre -- think Aimee Mann or even Dido -- most of the
time.
“Halfway Girl” is probably influenced by all of the artists I’ve already
mentioned, but when it comes right down to it, it’s just a great song, the kind
of song to blast in your car with the windows open. “My Star” and “”Wasting
Time” are both practically dead ringers for Aimee Mann, the latter being a
moody, made-for-soundtrack piece. “Forever” shows off a dark side of Blue that
she manages to pull off nicely. Other standout tracks are the triumphant
“Happiness” and the edgy title track.
While there is some great stuff on here, a few of the songs are more or less
filler. But it sure is hard to find an album these days with as many good tracks
as More Than Anything. Vinni Blue isn’t going to change the world, but
her music is sure to add something to the lives of people who appreciate it.
Hopefully, enough music lovers will see this review and have a chance to do just
that.
